Next conference: March 6-7, 2009, New York City
FEATURED SPEAKER: DAVID BYNUM
Founding Director, Long Island Group Advancing Science Education (LIGASE), and the Center for Science and Mathematics Education, Stony Brook University

David Bynum, Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, believes in taking an entrepreneurial approach to the merging of university and public education goals. He is founder and director of LIGASE (Long Island Group Advancing Science Education) a group that operates programs ranging from pre-K to the post-doctoral and faculty levels. Through LIGASE (www.stonybrook.edu/ligase), Dr. Bynum began offering workshops to in-service teachers. This led to the creation of a graduate teaching program in biology and in 2004 he merged the chemistry, physics and earth sciences teacher education programs into LIGASE. He is building a learning community where many of these teachers, now in Long Island schools, continue to study and work in laboratories at the University.
