Johanna Duncan-Poitier serves as Senior Deputy Commissioner of Education - P-16 in the New York State Education Department where she has responsibility for ensuring quality and accountability in over 7,000 schools, 271 colleges and universities, and 450 proprietary schools. She directs the preparation and practice of more than 227,000 teachers and school leaders. Ms. Duncan-Poitier also has responsibility for managing over $22.7 billion in State and Federal funding to support student achievement in New York across the Pre-Kindergarten through higher education continuum. Ms. Duncan-Poitier has provided over 20 years of leadership in the State Education Department, including having served for over a decade as Deputy Commissioner for the Office of the Professions. She has also held leadership positions at The City University of New York.
